Lisbon August 20th
The 'mini Christ' overlooking the harbour, 'Bairro Alto' neighbourhood which kicks off at midnight with a glass of port, a random tourist at the 700 year old catholic monastery 'Jeronimo' (where Vasco de Gama is buried), locals at cafe, pastry makers on a break at the packed out cake shop Pasteis de Belem (Lisbon is famous for cake).

Yeah i loved it! It was a bit quiet at this time of year because Europe takes August off basically (ahem). But I hear that the old town (Bairro Alto) is damn near packed most evenings the rest of the year. I loved the area. It is similar to how Barcelona was before becoming too commercial I reckon. Traditional old bars hand out Port and Portuguese tapas. The evening kicks off around 11pm in this way followed by dinner and then onto one of the dozens of bars til the wee small hours. There arent THAT many sightseeing attractions - 'Jeronimo' was really beautiful, the old town and Castle, all that maritime history...all very pretty. The food is terrific - loads of restaurants serve 'bacalahau' a traditional fish dish.
I really enjoyed it. You can easily cover it in a weekend. Maybe pair it with a trip to Grenada or Seville during Semana Santa? That would be kewl.
Wonderful pictures Alison. Glad you had a good time!
