Suggestion Box

...anyone who does have any ideas of inspiration - please stick them in this comment thread as Id love to hear them!

I think this is a terrific and interesting summary. Its from a hand wringing lefty-apologist and in some ways typifies what i mean about the lack of left right convergence on the issue of Islam.

I didnt mention religion as a seperate issue - and as a whole - but it worries me. We are getting more and more polarised as a nation over religion. As a very relaxed catholic i see the views on secularism becoming increasingly more important, even though ive argued very much against them in this past year and never thought that the UK would EVER need to think about this.

please leave your thoughts.... LOL!!
I have millions ... good thing you also ask for inspiration, that narrows it down a bit :P
or not...
Do you know my socrates Alison?
He was killed over freedom of speech, but that was not his crime. What they said he was guilty of was corrupting the youth. Over the years I have read whats called his "apology" almost compulsivly tyring to figure out exactly what he was sorry for .... from the desperation in his words, maybe so was he.
to make along story short ... he came to realize all he did was make people think ... which someone saw as the biggest threat there can be.
and guess he was most sorry for not being sorry at all for that. He was given the choice to stop or die... and he asked.... how can I stop being me? and this mattered more than life, cause what he was - was full of love and that he was not willing to give up.

Sound like anyone else from history ...
Personally, when I have a question I turn to the two people I love most .... Socrates and Jesus.
One knows the way - one knows the answer.

......... loved your blog rage! and agree, but you already gave the answer in the beigining which I also agreed with.
ENDLESS POSSIBILITES
I tend to focus on how and why more than the problems - like putting together a puzzle, or mathmatic formula, trust me its just as frustrating.

I would love to find someone just as serious to go over the endless possibilities and ideas with ... but everyone seems to think they already have the answer instead and I'm a show me proof that works kind of girl.

so far I have decided to just be myself... The best self I can be.. .. to bad being this is something people either love or hate most!!
often both at the same time and from the same person.
But I understand Im a very hard and complex individual.
anyway... I noticed you said somewhere in your posts ... the need for light to be shined on issues. That is true! but long ago I heard an anology about light ... shinging a bright light into peoples faces only makes them angry, they close their eyes and turn away ... especially if they have been in the dark for along time. Understand?
I thought instead to be star somehow, shining in the distance, they still give enough light to see... and wise men will follow. (if there are any left that is)

What an amazing comment - i liked the idea about light making people angry. You are probably right. Though i wish people would get angry sometimes.

'Over the years I have read whats called his "apology" almost compulsivly tyring to figure out exactly what he was sorry for ..' I was going to suggest the same could be applied to Blasir - just kidding. All political careers end in failure, Socrates was no different i guess. If you think of him that way.

I overthink things. So i steer clear of philosophy which would make things worse for me! lol.

Im a bit distracted tonight because of this BBC thing on Scientology. It is defined as a cult in the UK and the US scientologists seem quite annoyed about it.
They are creepy though.

I sometimes think 'islamism' should be redefined as a cult. It fits the bill. Plus it might mean the BBC would be willing to ask such probing questions.

angry as in *react* to sort out rather than just shout because they are right/indignant/annoyed...if that makes sense.

oh - and i know im not exactly a role model on that sense which is why i just dont get blogging anymore. When i first found blogs they seemed to be saying great things - all new and you can learn a good deal but now it feels a bit like - ok, next? eg what do we DO. (re the whole of politics)

Man that comment was waaay to long. Whenever I see something like that I read the first sentence and the last sentence than make up my own middle, its a little game I play.

I'm sorry to read that you are feeling despondent, I'll admit that I do from time to time. My blogging is light at the moment myself due to work commitments but I hope to be more active in the future again.

You seem to be concerned about disagreements between bloggers which I find puzzling. I concern myself with the quality of the minds that I influence in my life and not the quantity. The funny thing about life is that it seems that one minute everyone seems to be ignoring you and the next they are hanging on your every word. IN the fickle world of the internet that may be doubly true.

You never know what lies around the corner for you Alison.

Tu S. Tin, can you send me some of that Ecstacy you got hold of? Man, that's good stuff, I can tell.

Getting more polarized as a nation over religion? You mean Islam specifically? You're not getting polarized, you're getting invaded, attacked. What you need is a good, old fashioned evangelistic tent revival, complete with lots of preachers shrieking FIRE! And BRIMSTONE!

In World War 2, the Nazis were portrayed, accurately actually, as satanic, evil forces of the devil. It was effective propaganda that flowed not just from the newspapers and radios but from the pulpits as well. Now you have a whole new horde of Nazis you've actually invited into your midst like taking an asp to your bed and getting UNrelaxed about your religion is the best thing you can do.

Fight fire with fire. Preach the evils of Islam from the pulpit. Do you really think the government would arrest all those preachers for it? Hardly, not with all the imams preaching hate toward all of you.

There you go, Alison. Free inspiration.

Isn't Socrates' "apology" using the word more in the sense of justification rather than saying sorry, in the same way as we talk of "apologists"?

Socrates' death should remind us that democracy is not the perfect system, and can lead to the power of the mob being directed against individual freedom by self-serving demogogues.

The same rough justice got handed out to Phocion, an esteemed Athenian general. Later the people repented of what they'd done, executed the main instigator in his prosecution and set up a statue to him.

Richard,
have you ever read it?
his defense was an apoplogy no matter how you look at it. He was trying to figure out what he did that they thought was so wrong? and he wasnt sorry. In the end he himself said he was guilty, there was no mob involved at all, if anything that was their gulit,I like to think the alter to an unknow god that he was willing to die for was erected in his honor because of that. Thank you for the Phocion lead.... I dont think I know that story :)

tu s. tin,

I read it years ago and can't clearly remember it, so I won't disagree on the apology. By mentioning the mob, I didn't mean to apply he was lynched out of hand, rather that he was a victim of kangaroo-court style justice, led by demagogues. Both he and Phocion were contrary figures, not willing to stoop to the level of their intriguing enemies. As I understand it, Socrates was killed because of his association with the short-lived oligarchy that took power at the end of the Pelopponesian War (Athens being defeated)

My info on Phocion comes from Plutarch's short biography of the man.

Keep your own blog going, Alison. I enjoy reading it!

But I know who work (of the paying variety) gets in the way.

I like the term "relaxed catholic", by the way. That's sort of how I regard myself, but Oriana Fallaci's "Christian Atheist" may be more like it.

Alsion, get into life based issues - your own life, where you live, a few pics, your oulook on London itself, pets etc. It doesn't all have to be political.

That is poetic justice. Would you like to learn several tips on Diet Pills this would even impress an expert? The particulars that I'm going to cover in this column just happen to be a couple of the things I've been thinking about a lot lately. Before you purchase a Diet Pills you are going to have to spend some time reviewing that. I had coworkers calling me to tell me they'd seen this.
