France Echos : le blog in English

It appears that the library of “l’Ecole des Chartes” in the Sorbonne which houses 100,000 significant books and manuscripts dating back to the middle ages has been ransacked and many of the books were destroyed. France Echos writes:

"Today (march 22, 2006) we learn that this government has let 1,000 years of cultural and religious legacy to become smoke and ashes.

Documents of more than TEN CENTURIES!

If the French populate is abandoned by its government, it will defend itself. However books and manuscripts can not defend themselves.

The state has failed in its 3 major missions:
1- To protect its territory.
2- To protect its citizens and their goods.
3- To protect and to transmit its cultural and religious heritage.

Our leaders have inherited more than 15 centuries of history, legacy and culture. They are not only denying this heritage, but they are also allowing the destruction of what our ancestors have build, written, thought century after century"

read on here.

That's beyond tragic.

This is sad. Is there any hope that the French government will find some heart and act to protect itself?
Here in the US, if you go to a gun show, there will always invariably be a French army rifle for sale with a sign on it that says:

For Sale, French Army Rifle, Never Fired, Dropped Once.

That's how the French are seen over here and for good reason. My disgust grows daily over their leaders cowardly behaviour and I have no doubt that they will end up calling on the US and their neighbors to help them when it looks like their own precious political asses are about to be overthrown. And I suppose we will rather than see the muslims take over. Craven bastards!

Alison - holy crap. When I first read what you had written I immediately thought - MOSLEMS! Then I told myself, 'no, no.' Wrong, wrong.

My God. These Moslems are insane. They have to be stopped. And rastaman you are right - the French are regularly mocked in America. For good reason.

Alison,
I saw this a couple weeks ago, too, but after searching about a bit, I believe it could actually be that a "librairie" rather than a "bibliotheque" was burned.
I could find no other reference to a library, but a bookstore being burned by rioters.

It appears that the France-Echos English blog has been shut down. The link now reads something in French, from which I can pick out ominous things like "suspendu". Is it possible Alison that you could do a quick summary of what the rest of the post says in English?
